free jazz (1959)

Ornette Coleman, alto sax; Don Cherry, trumpet;
Charlie Haden, bass; Billy Higgins, drums.

This is an exceptional example of the free-floating harmonic structure associated with Ornette Coleman and his bassist, Charlie Haden. The inflections used by Coleman in this melody are strongly reminiscent of rural blues performances. While those around him often abandoned it, Coleman always had roots in the blues and his playing reflects it. Don Cherry was a real soulmate to Coleman and could tap into everything Coleman was doing. This is one of the rare unions of two musicians on the same spiritual plane.
